The following list is not comprehensive but we recommend you avoid these chemicals in the skincare products you use. Read your labels and research the ingredients used before purchasing.
This active ingredient is found in most anti-bacterial product such as deodorants, cleansers, and hand sanitizers. Studies show that this ingredient can pass through skin and disrupt hormone function. It is poison for bodies and toxic to the environment.
Parabens are a class of preservatives used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. They go by such as names methylparaben, ethylparaben, n-propylparaben and many others that end in “paraben.” Parabens are found in moisturizer, lipstick, foundation, concealer, eye makeup and makeup removers. Parabens have been known to cause skin irritations. The EU Committee on Consumer Safety, regulates the uses of parabens in terms of concentrations allowed and some are banned altogether.
Like parabens, there is a very long list of names these chemicals go by. Essentially they are used in plastics, but are also used in personal care, cosmetic products as well as food.
Phthalates have been linked to health ills such as infertility, birth defects and certain cancers.
Fragrance or Perfume or Parfum
Any product with a scent has an artificial and chemical additive unless essential oils are used. This is a very common eczema irritant.
These are commonly known as silicones. They are used in cosmetics to soften, smoothen or moisten skin. They are also widely found in shampoos, deodorants, body or facial creams. Some of these compounds, classified as D4 and D5 have been assessed in Canada and EU as toxic and evidence shows it interferes with human hormones, disrupt the endocrine, reproductive and immune system.
Or Polyethylene glycols are actually petroleum derivatives widely used in cosmetics as cream bases, thickeners, softeners and solvents. Another related chemical to PEGs, Propylene glycol, should be avoided because it aids skin penetration which can allow harmful ingredients to be absorbed. PEGS are unsafe as it can possibly cause irritation and toxicity.
This is the most extensively used chemical in sunscreens. It is also probably one of the most toxic ingredients in skin care products that skin allergies react to most! To avoid this chemical, chose a zinc based sunblock.
Diethanolamine (DEA), Monoethanolamine (MEA) & Triethanolamine (TEA)
Creamy or sudsy soaps, cleaners, and shampoos mostly contain these harmful ingredients.
It is what causes irritations when it gets into our eyes. The EU classified DEA as harmful and may possibly damage one’s health from prolonged exposure.
It will be difficult not to find this chemical in the ingredient list of conventional hair dyes. It is known to cause allergic reactions to those with eczema, sensitive skin or other skin conditions.
It’s gross, but formaldehyde is an embalming fluid. It has been classified as a human carcinogen that can possibly cause cancer. Yet, this ingredient is used extensively in cosmetics eg. nail polish, hair products and deodorants.
Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hdroxytoluene (BHT)
These chemicals are synthetic antioxidants used in preservatives for lipsticks, moisturizers and other cosmetics. They can be found in processed food as well. It is known to disrupt the hormonal system.
Petroleum Jelly is well known over the years as a barrier to lock in moisture, as well as make hair shine. Exposure to both petrolatum and another harmful contaminant, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, is associated with cancer. The EU classifies petrolatum as a carcinogen and regulates its use in cosmetics.
